Understanding sinusitis: when a ‘cold’ lingers

What sinusitis is, common symptoms, and when to seek ENT assessment instead of waiting it out.

Understanding sinusitis: when a ‘cold’ lingers

Sinusitis means inflammation of the lining of the sinuses—the air-filled spaces around your nose and eyes. It often follows a viral cold, but sometimes bacteria or ongoing inflammation keep symptoms going.

Common symptoms

  • Blocked or stuffy nose
  • Thick nasal discharge
  • Facial pressure or pain, worse when bending forward
  • Reduced sense of smell
  • Headache or tooth discomfort in the upper jaw

When to see a specialist

Most short-lived episodes improve with time, fluids, and simple measures. Book an assessment if symptoms are severe, last more than 5 days without improvement, or worsen after an initial improvement—patterns like these can suggest bacterial sinusitis or other issues that benefit from targeted treatment.

What we focus on in clinic

We take a clear history, examine the nose in detail, and if the diagnosis needs confirmation, we have the facilities to do a painless diagnostic nasal endoscopy. We will explain options in plain language—whether that is conservative care, medication, or discussion of procedures when chronic problems persist.
